100+ DIY Wonderful Wooden Gifts

ECOS 12/09/2015

Everyone knows: receiving a gift that was handmade makes it extra special. And we think if that gift was made from a beautiful piece of wood, it’s even better. Every piece of wood is uniquely beautiful – the grain, the color, the textures – all combine to make an object that's nature's art. You can make things out of sticks you found in your yard, from an old pallet or barn door, some exotic species of tree, or the cheapest boards from the lumberyard. The options are endless! To get your gears turning, today we're sharing over 100 DIY wonderful wooden gifts, so you can find the perfect gift for all the loved ones in your life!

All of these projects are so different that it’s impossible to give you tips for each one, but here are a couple of things that relate to all of them:

  • Make it Safe for the Recipient. This is a pretty obvious tip, but sometimes the most obvious step is the one that gets overlooked. Remember to sand down rough edges. Make sure there aren’t any sharp nails or screws pointing out. If it's a large item, test it out to make sure it's strong and stable.
  • Use a Safer Finish. Conventional paints and varnishes can emit toxic VOCs even after they've dried. It's great to give a gift that keeps on giving, but you don't want your gift to keep on giving toxic fumes. Check out ECOS Paints, stains, and varnishes for finishes that are beautiful, durable, and non-toxic*. *Conforms to ASTMD-4236, specifically concerning oral toxicity, skin irritation and respiratory effects.
  • Work Safe While Building. Most wood projects are going to require some use of power tools. Always follow basic safety rules when working with then. Also, work in a tidy, uncluttered space; wear eye and ear protection; and remove loose jewelry. Most importantly, take your time. Working too quickly puts you at a higher risk for hurting yourself.
