DIY Must-Haves For Your Next Renovation

With the rise of social media, DIY home fixes have become more popular than ever. Plenty of homeowners and even renters prefer to do minor fixes and project themselves rather than spend extra money, and some take it to a whole other level with large, ambitious projects. If you're an aspiring DIY-er or a long-time expert, there are a few items you'll want to have in stock to keep your project running smoothly and minimize hardware store trips.

Eco-Friendly Glue

No matter what you're working on in your home, there's a very strong chance it will involve some degree of nailing, screwing, or gluing parts together. Many types of glue can give off toxic fumes or be otherwise harmful to the environment as well as your home's air quality. When purchasing glue for your DIY projects, check to make sure it's eco-friendly and won't give off fumes.

Spray Paint

If you've found an old piece of furniture that's just dying for a fresh coat of paint, one of the simplest go-to DIY fixes is spray paint. Applying is fast, easy, and usually takes very little time to fully dry. If you are applying spray paint to any of your DIY projects, try to do so outside or in a well-ventilated area. This will not only limit clean-up time, but will help avoid fumes.

Stain And Varnish

If you've got some old wood furniture or floors that are looking a little worn, some new stain or varnish could give it the extra life it needs. Be careful when priming a floor; not all stains are designed for the same purpose and environments. If you're staining a deck, for example, you'll want something designed to weather the outdoors.

Odorless Paints

If you're using standard latex (or non-latex) paint for your walls or another part of your DIY project, be on the lookout for odorless paints. Not only will you not have to worry about the smell of fresh paint in your home for an extended period of time, but odorless paints give off fewer harmful fumes than many standard alternatives. Look for neutral tones if you're using these paints for walls. In a 2017 interior design trends survey, more than a third of respondents said they would choose a neutral color palette if redecorating their home.
