Dazzling Design Ideas for a Welcoming Foyer

The word “foyer” comes from the French for “hearth.” This conjures up images of a stone fireplace with a fire happily crackling under a pot of soup. It’s the image that welcomes you to come in, sit down, and enjoy good company.

The same is true of the entry space just behind our front doors. For those who want guests to feel right at home from the moment they walk through the door, consider these dazzling design ideas for a welcoming foyer.

Get Creative With Storage

Some of the biggest challenges to designing a welcoming foyer are purely practical. The foyer is the space where guests leave their shoes, coats, hats, purses, and umbrellas, and because of that, they can often become cluttered with belongings. Adding some tasteful storage options helps eliminate the clutter for a more convivial space. Consider adding:

  • Wall hooks
  • A coat rack
  • Shelving for shoes
  • Bins for hats, scarves, and gloves tucked under benches
  • Cubbies to organize coats for multiple family members

Additionally, it’s helpful to have dedicated spaces for the other things that tend to make their home in the foyer, such as keys and incoming mail.

Utilize Your Space

Depending on the design of your house, your entryway may not be the most spacious area in the house. But that doesn’t mean you can’t create an appealing design.

Once you have the clutter out of the way, look for furniture that matches the scale of the room and fits into the nooks and crannies of the space. You may not have the floor space for an end table, but you can add a floating shelf for keys. If you have negative space, like an empty place under the stairs, liven it up with a small settee or wall art.

Maximize Your Lighting

People tend to feel ill-at-ease in dim, shadowy places, which can work against you when you’re trying to create a welcoming space. If you don’t have many windows, add ample lighting of your own with hanging or wall lights to maximize floor space. You can also make a space feel brighter with a light color scheme, airy window treatments, and wall mirrors.

Don’t Fear Color

Color is one of the quickest ways to impact our emotions, so adding some color is a sure way to liven up your space. A few quick ways to incorporate color include:

  • Brightly colored drapes
  • A fancy rug
  • Wallpaper
  • Bright paint for the front door
  • Potted plants or flowers

When in doubt, you can always fall back on a bright coat of paint for the walls or even for a single accent wall. At ECOS Paints, we have hundreds of different paint colors to choose from to help brighten up your own foyer.
