Staining Concrete: What Do I Need To Know?

The industrial style is one of the most popular interior design styles in 2019. But plain concrete floors, slabs, and blocks around your home may not be your aesthetic.

Fortunately, there are plenty of color and style options available when you're painting or staining concrete so you can maintain your industrial loft without sacrificing your love for color.

To ensure you do the job right the first time without any frustration, here are a few important things to keep in mind while staining concrete.

Remember to properly prep your surface

No matter what you're painting, it's important to prep your surface. When you don't prepare your concrete for painting or staining, you'll experience sealer failure.

In the event that you've incorrectly applied the stain/paint or the surface wasn't properly prepped, you may be able to hide small spots with additional paint. However, larger spots that are more noticeable may require a reseal. That said, consider using an organic concrete sealer and following the instructions exactly to get the best results.

Be careful not to contaminate surfaces

Depending on what you're painting or staining, surface contamination may be difficult to spot. When staining concrete floors, you could miss stubborn stains that might not be readily noticeable until after you've started.

To avoid surface contamination, it's important to remove the stain before you begin. Unfortunately, removing a stain from concrete flooring or another concrete surface may be difficult if you're not sure where to look.

If you're unsure if there are stains on the surface you'll be painting, it's recommended to spray the surface with water. This will temporarily darken the surface, which can make it easier to spot and remove stains.

Looking for zero VOC paints?

If you're looking for paint color samples or you need help picking out paint, you're not alone. In a 2017 interior design trends survey, over a third of respondents said they would choose a neutral color palette when they were redecorating their home. But it's a good idea to consider more than just paint colors when you're getting ready to paint or stain.
