Tips for Picking the Perfect Wood Stain

Wood stains are a great way to refresh the look of wood floors, furniture, and trim throughout your house. However, the finality of putting a stain on wood can make picking a wood stain an intimidating process. After all, you don’t want to choose a stain you don’t like, only to later go through the tedious process of removing it. These tips for picking the perfect wood stain will help you make the right choice the first time.

Test Your Stain

Wood stains come in a variety of colors, and most vendors will supply you with sample pictures of each for your reference. However, just as you don’t rely on images alone when you’re painting, you don’t want to rely on the sample pictures when staining. Different woods have their own colors and character, making stains look different when applied to different wood types. Try out a sample before you commit to a wood stain. If possible, test your stain sample on a part of the wood that isn’t easily visible, such as the back of a furniture piece, to decide if you like it. If this isn’t possible, try to find a piece of wood that is the same species as the wood you are staining to get a better idea of how the finished stain will look.

Remember Your Wood Grain

Along with different colors, different woods have different grain patterns. Depending on the look you want to achieve, you may want either the grain or the color of the wood to be the main focus. Different colors of wood stain will either highlight or downplay your wood’s grain pattern, so decide how much you want your grain to stand out before choosing or applying your stain.

Look at the Rest of the Room

The wood you are staining may not be the only wood in the room. If you are staining an end table, the floor may also be wood, and if the floor is wood, the trim may be as well. Before picking a stain color, decide how that wood color will look compared to the rest of the wood in the room. You will want to get a stain color that’s as close to the rest of the room as possible. At the very least, make sure to choose one that doesn’t clash.

It’s our hope that picking the perfect wood stain will no longer be considered an intimidating decision. Check out ECOS Paints' wide range of furniture paints and wood stains today.
