Convertible Cribs

Gaining in popularity, these multi-functional pieces of furniture transform from a crib to a toddler bed.  Some even transform even further into twin and full beds! The best thing about convertible cribs is that they grow with your child, so you don’t need to buy multiple pieces of furniture. And that’s also what makes them the acme of eco-friendly because you’re reducing your use of natural resources.

Non-Toxic Bedding

Baby’s spend 10-12 hours a night sleeping, and then even more during the day napping. Clearly, having safe bedding is important since your little one will be spending so much time in her precious nest. As a trend, Kolcraft says, “Look for even more natural and organic bedding options this year, in addition to comfortable, breathable crib mattresses made with cotton, organic cotton or rayon from bamboo fabric covers to give your little one natural softness at night.”

Natural Wood Accents

According to the design experts at Project Junior, “You’ll be able to spot wood in all its natural glory in kids design this year. It adds a rustic touch and doesn’t have to be heavy handed if used sparingly in accents.”

Handmade Decor

With the explosion of Etsy and other similar sites and local shops, handmade is all the rage. The great thing about handmade is it requires far fewer resources (like energy) to create when compared to mass-produced products. Even better, it gives the nursery a real one-of-a-kind feel.

Texturing and Layering with Natural Materials

Another lovely nursery design trend that lends a warm, welcoming quality to a space. For this trend, Handmade Talks says, “Incorporate more natural materials such as breathable cotton bedding, utilitarian grass baskets and welcoming woolen rugs in the nursery. When these natural materials are used in their own earthy tones, their textures get highlighted. Layering with these textures creates a collected look too.”

Nature Murals

Murals, in general, are a big trend in nursery design, but going the way of Mother Nature is especially popular. Canadian Home Trends says, “Stumped for wall decor? Why not paint the bottom of your walls with grass, flowers and trees that appear to be sprouting from the carpets and teach your child to appreciate nature early on.”
