Tips and Tricks for Painting Your Front Door

It’s the first thing we see when we come home, yet we tend to forget about our front doors. With these paint tricks, your door will catch everyone’s eye.

We all want to make a good first impression when guests come to our homes. We polish the floors and put a bouquet in the foyer, but this isn’t the first thing visitors see when they arrive. It’s the front door. Adding a coat of paint is a wonderful way to add a welcoming charm to a home’s exterior. And we have several tips and tricks for painting your front door and doing it well.

Right Type of Paint

Between direct sunlight, rain, snow, and hail, our front doors go through a lot more than our interior doors do. As such, they need paint that can stand up to the elements more effectively than an interior eggshell paint. Higher-gloss paints, such as those you can find among our zero VOC* furniture paints, offer higher sheens and added durability, making them a better choice for an exterior surface like your front door.

Picking a Color

The standard colors for front doors are brown, black, white, red, or blue, but some homeowners choose more whimsical colors like lime green or sunshine yellow. There isn’t a “wrong” color to paint your door, but there are some factors you should keep in mind when you make your choice.

Other Color Elements

Your door sits alongside a whole spectrum of other colors: your home’s siding, brickwork, shutters, roof, trim, and landscape. These will all impact how a color appears when you add it to the mix. You may consider matching a color you’re already using for one of these elements or choosing a contrasting color. For example, painting the door to match the shutters will present a unified look to a home’s exterior. On the other hand, a red door against a blue house front will add a pop of welcoming warmth to your home’s color scheme.

Fade

As mentioned, a home’s front door receives a lot more wear than other areas. Because of that, paint colors are likely to fade more quickly, even when you’re using a high-gloss paint. If you choose a darker color like black, you’ll likely have to repaint it every few years.

Painting Tricks

Prep First

As with any paint project, begin by preparing the surface. It’s a good idea to remove or cover hardware like doorknobs or glasswork first. Next, start by sanding the door with 400-grit sandpaper and rubbing down the entire surface. If the existing paint is in good condition, you will be able to start painting immediately. If not, apply a primer to the door first.

Start With the Details

Because a door’s entire surface isn’t perfectly flat, one trick for painting your front door smoothly is to focus your attention on the bevels and other detail work first. Use a hand brush to paint these areas, and then use a roller on the rest for a smooth finish.
