Wait, a Primer Can Purify My Home’s Air? But How?

There are a plethora of things that can degrade the air quality of your home, from springtime pollen to the dirt and dust your children tracked in. But if one thing degrades home air quality almost more than anything else, it’s volatile organic compounds, also known as VOCs.

These airborne substances exist in a variety of home goods, such as cleaners, carpets, and aerosol sprays, but one of the biggest offenders is paint products. Because of that, people are often surprised that an effective way to combat VOCs is by using paint primer to clear the air.

“Wait, a primer can purify my home’s air? But how?” Read on to find out.

What Is Air Purifying Primer?

Air purifying primer is just like normal primer—a foundational paint you apply to the walls before adding your first coat of paint. However, the air purifying primer helps seal in VOCs when you paint over it, keeping them from escaping into the air.

Additionally, air-purifying primer helps to reduce VOCs that may already be in your air from other sources, like cleaners or formaldehyde. That way, you can help improve your home’s indoor air quality even after you’re done with home renovations.

How Does It Work?

The secret to how a primer can be used to purify your home’s air is how it’s formulated. It utilizes a unique technology called a molecular sieve. Molecular sieves are porous and designed to absorb smaller molecules, like VOCs. Other purifying devices use the same substance, such as hospital oxygen generators.

Users can apply these primers to almost all the same surfaces as normal primers, such as:

  • Drywall
  • Plaster
  • Chipboard
  • Fiberboard
  • Particleboard
  • Plywood

Note

Not every paint job requires primer, but that doesn’t mean you have to go without air-purifying technology. There are also air-purifying paints available to help reduce the VOCs in your home’s air.

Why Choose Air Purifying Primer

These days, it’s almost impossible to avoid some exposure to VOCs. Still, there are plenty of reasons why you would want to keep that exposure to a minimum. In high amounts, volatile organic compounds can cause health issues, such as headaches, breathing problems, and eye irritation. This is especially true in vulnerable groups like:

  • Young children
  • Pregnant women
  • Those with allergies
  • Those with asthma
  • Those with chemical sensitivities

At ECOS Paints, we want to help you improve your home’s air quality for your whole family. That’s why we have water-based primer paints, including air-purifying primers, to keep your VOC exposure as limited as possible.
