Are you interested in green or non-toxic living, eco-friendliness, or sustainability? Whether you’re an architect, an interior designer, a homeowner, or contractor, you should know about the Health Product Declaration Collaborative – an organization seeking to improve the building industry with an emphasis on transparency, openness, and innovation. In a landscape typically fraught with secrets and non-disclosure, they’ve developed the Health Product Declaration, which creates an open window to critical information about supply chains, manufacturing, ingredients, and more. Learn more about product transparency with HPDs and how you can use this resource below!

Why are Health Product Declarations Needed?

Typically, getting the facts about product content is difficult (to say the least) and rarely satisfies customers’ curiosity. The HPD allows manufacturers to clear the air by disclosing product composition which helps customers better understand what they are buying and possible health impacts. Also, manufactures share details about their supply chain and how they source better materials.

How does the HPD Collaborative identify safe chemicals?

They use an approved system called the GreenScreen for Safer Chemicals, as the standard for assessing potential hazardous materials. The GreenScreen has a scale which runs from 1 to 4, with 4 representing the lowest hazard. In addition, chemicals which have an impact in one of the 4 areas below are also included in the HPD analysis, to ensure comprehensive assessment.

  1. Ozone depletion
  2. Global warming
  3. Pollution, Prevention and Toxics
  4. Halogenated Flame Retardants

How do you use it?

Although the HPD’s are managed by the manufacturers, they may not always be readily apparent on a product label or easy to locate on their company website. That’s why the HPD Collaborative has partnered with various online product libraries to make it easier for consumers to find what they’re looking for.
