As a new parent, there are tons of things you need to do to get your home ready for your new baby. You need to prepare the nursery, stock up on diapers, bottles, and supplies, and find the perfect furniture set that can grow with your child. If you’re like most parents, the tasks can feel daunting. While the list can feel never-ending, few things are as important as giving your child a safe place to sleep night after night. Finding the right crib can be tough, but it’s not impossible. Here are a few simple tips to help you find the perfect crib for your new baby.

Pick a Crib That Has Multiple Safety Ratings

These days, new cribs and baby furniture have multiple certifications and seals of approval showing that the furniture is safe for infants and toddlers. These seals are there to give you peace of mind. But they can also help you separate poor quality furniture from options that are worth the investment. If a crib doesn’t have a safety seal, keep looking for a different model.

Don’t Turn Down Hand-Me-Downs

Sure, second-hand furniture may not be the perfect color or look brand new, but that doesn’t mean it’s a bad option. If your friends and family offer to give you a crib their child outgrew, consider taking them up on their offer. You can always refinish and repaint the crib to fit the theme of your nursery once you’re done designing the room. Just make sure to use a paint designed for cribs  that won’t expose your baby to toxins or chemicals. These paints have a low VOC content, keeping your child safe even if they’re exposed to paint chips as the crib starts to see wear and tear.

Focus on Function Rather Than Style

Ideally, the crib you choose should complement the rest of your baby’s room including the nursery paint color, window treatments, and carpeting. Additionally, it should satisfy your personal aesthetics. However, if the right crib available at the right price doesn’t match your idea of the perfect design, don’t dismiss it. A fresh coat of non-toxic paint for cribs will often be enough to make the crib feel like it was meant for the room. Remember, your child won’t be keeping the crib forever. Before you know it, they’ll outgrow it and you’ll need to start looking for new furniture again.

Go Bold

In a 2017 survey, more than 33% of homeowners surveyed said they’d prefer a neutral color scheme for their home. But that doesn’t mean you have to go with a neutral color in your child’s nursery. Instead, go big, go bold, and pick a color crib that you love. Fun and bright colors are a great choice, but if you want to keep it classy, neutral tones can work as well. Ultimately, it’s a matter of personal preference. As long as you have fun decorating the nursery and choosing a crib, that’s all that matters.

If you plan on redoing your child’s crib, make sure you use a paint designed for cribs to add a touch of personality and flair to the furniture. This will keep your child safe and healthy so you can focus on getting the rest you deserve!
