Where to Find Great Green Nursery Decor & Furnishings

Lullaby 04/16/2014

There’s an image circulating around Facebook lately from the Story of Stuff that captures how to stay green and healthy in the dizzying landscape of baby products. We agree -- if you can thrift it, swap it, or borrow it -- save yourself the dime, throw on a fresh coat of paint and feel proud you protected the planet and your pocketbook!

But really, there are probably a few things you will have to purchase brand spanking new if you’re expecting. For those times, we've sifted through many, many companies, went down a couple rabbit holes (Europe has some really awesome green furniture!), and are bringing you our best roundup of green nursery decor and furnishings. Enjoy!

  • BabyEarth*: An expansive eco-friendly section that rivals any company that is solely green, BabyEarth meets all your decor and furniture needs in a one-stop shop.

  • Babyletto: This place stole our hearts away with their cribs, particularly the Hudson Nursery Collection, which is easy to convert to a toddler and daybed, made from sustainable wood and has non-toxic finishes.

  • Craigslist: Buying secondhand is a great green choice! Check your local Craigslist listings and local thrift store for gently used items to give new life to. Note: Be aware of recalls (check recalls.gov) and new safety standards (for things like lead paint, crib rungs, etc).
  • ecomom*: Offering only the safest and most reliable products, ecomom is a trusted mainstay in the green community. The Holgate Trolley Stool caught our eyes for giving any nursery an extra something special.

  • etsy: This site is a haven of handmade, amazing stuff. And a lot of the baby and nursery gear is made lovingly by work-at-home moms, which is even better!
  • Oeuf: Definitely more of a boutique company compared to our previous choices, Oeuf’s furniture, craftsmanship and design are jaw-dropping gorgeous. We love the mini library and see it fitting in any nursery.

  • The Ultimate Green Store: As the name implies, you can find almost anything on this site. And, even though they have a decent baby category, it's always nice to find things that can grow with your child or adapt to other spaces of the home. Multi-functional pieces with a long life are a green designer's dream!
(Special Tip: If you're still expecting, you can add anything you find on these sites to a baby registry - ANYTHING! Use BabyList to add your favorite eco-finds and even Lullaby Paints.)
