4 Great DIY Interior Wall Painting Tips You Should Know

Planning a painting project for your home? Then you need to make sure you’re following proper painting techniques. Though most homeowners understand the basics of painting protocol—drop cloths, thoroughly stirring paint, and utilizing painters’ tape—they often lack the deeper knowledge that leads to a professional-quality paint job. If you want to make sure that your walls look like something a pro would be proud of, then take a look at these DIY interior wall painting tips you should know.

Make the Most of Your Primer

Primer is one of the most important things you can do for your walls. Not only does it give you a better base for your paint, but it also helps ensure that you don’t get any splotchy areas in your finished product. For example, when you finish painting the walls, you may find that the color is uniform, but the sheen isn’t quite consistent. This is most often because the filler you used to cover holes or cracks absorbed the paint, dulling the surface. The smooth texture from the filler also stands out against the slightly bumpy texture in the rest of the wall.

Primer is your best way to fix that. Though a lot of paints offer primer within the paint itself, it’s always a good idea to choose a primer specifically for walls. At ECOS Paints, we have a few different wall and ceiling primers to choose from—we’ll make sure your paint goes on just the way you want it to.

Mix Paint in a Large Bucket

Different paint colors may vary slightly from one can to the next. To reduce the chances of uneven wall color, mix all the paint into one large bucket and stir with an aerated stir stick. Think of adding more cans than less when doing your own wall painting—you can always pour the leftovers back into cans when after you finish. This tip also encourages using a paint grid rather than a tray for even wall coats.

Roll Paint Along Edges

When we use a paint roller on the main parts of the wall but a paintbrush along the edges, then we’re creating uneven paint. The texture of a brush is much different than the texture of a roller, so brush on the paint but then immediately roll it out to get the ideal texture. Get as close to the opposite wall as possible without bumping the trim.

Feather Out Paint When You Can’t Keep a Wet Edge

One of the biggest mistakes DIY painters make comes from lap marks. This is the striping that occurs from rolling over paint that’s starting to dry. If you don’t want lap marks or can’t paint fast enough to keep a wet edge, then you need to feather out your paint. Roll your nearly dry roller in different directions along the dry edge or weather out the paint as you go. This will encourage an even paint as you go along the feathered areas with fresh paint.
