According to a study by the Survey Research Institute at Cornell University, 83% of travelers say they would choose an allergy-friendly room if they had the option. That being said, hotel owners everywhere can benefit from implementing certain strategies to increase business and create a space where those with allergies feel safe and healthy throughout the duration of their stay. Many people think it's difficult to maintain this type of cleaning and renovation efficiency, but it's probably easier than you think. Here are just a few top tips to make any hotel room allergen-friendly.

Use Low VOC Paints

We've harped on the benefits of eco-friendly paints, but they're particularly important for those who suffer from allergies. In a recent study, participants spent six full work days in an environmentally-controlled office space at the TIEQ lab at the Syracuse Center of Excellence. In this space, VOC levels were reduced to approximately 50 micrograms per cubic meter and 40 cubic feet per minute of outdoor air per person. They found that, on average, cognitive scores were 101% higher than in conventional workspaces. When you consider the fact that VOC levels over 500 ppb could cause problems for people with chemical sensitivities according to a report by CBC Marketplace, it's absolutely worthwhile to use low VOC paints and other painting products.

Avoid Mold

Make sure your housekeeping staff knows how to recognize signs of mold and mildew and eradicate them immediately. Mold is a major allergy trigger for some people, and its unpleasant odor can turn away guests regardless of their allergy status.

Reconsider Smoking/Pet Policies

Finally, you may want to reconsider your hotel's pet policy and/or smoking policy. Pet dander can trigger allergies in those who are sensitive, while smoke is more likely to trigger respiratory issues. Being more strict when setting these policies can help cut back on these triggers, keeping the rooms cleaner and guests safer.

Remember, studies have shown that levels of several organics average two to five times higher indoors than outdoors, and when inhaled they can contribute to several health problems. Taking these small steps to reduce indoor toxins can help your guests enjoy an allergen-friendly stay. For more information about low VOC wall primers and paints, contact Ecos Paints.
