10 Fantastic Painting Ideas for Kids’ Rooms
Want to do something special for your child’s room? Maybe a fresh coat of paint is in order. Here are some of our favorite painting ideas for kids’ rooms!
The idea of painting during the summer isn’t exactly a new one. The air is warm enough, the breeze through the windows is perfect, and you have a little extra time compared to those short winter days. If you’re like most people, you want to take advantage of the season and complete some home improvement projects. One of our favorites is sprucing up the kids’ rooms. We often leave their room the same from elementary to middle school, and maybe even to high school. Give them the chance to enjoy a room that both fits their evolving personality and brings a smile to their face! Here are some of our favorite painting ideas for kids’ rooms in terms of key colors and some other design ideas. Check it out!
Paint Colors
Pale Yellow
In a previous blog, we talked about the effect colors have on our mood. If you want a happier kid, then a pale yellow room is a fantastic choice. We say pale yellow over bright yellow because too bright of a yellow for too long of a time can end up causing more anxiety than relaxation. The best part about pale yellow is that it will work for a nursery color and withstand the change as they grow up.
Beige
Beige sounds boring to kids, but it’s actually a great choice for their rooms! Similar to white, it gives a good backbone for color in other areas. If they want a bright bedspread, lots of color on the walls, or even just want a clean design, then beige is perfect.
Here are some of our favorite color pairings with beige: blue, dark greens, and white (for a clean-cut room).
Cerulean Blue
Most kids will grow out of the soft baby blue from their nursery. But that doesn’t mean that blue is no longer an option. Deeper blues like cerulean are great options for a blue bedroom. As we mentioned in our color affecting mood blog, blues that are too dark can end up creating a sadder mood. You’ll have to be careful about your blue color choice—there are tons of options, so of course, ask your child for their pick!
Remember that you can always lighten the room with some white or light gray accents or make it a bit darker with black and navy accents.
Light Green
Got a nature lover on your hands? Or a super calm child? Continue that passion and calmness by painting your room a soft green. Forest greens are great for rooms outside of the bedroom, but the bedroom needs a bit of lighter hue for children. The softer shade will brighten their days and also pairs better with other colors.
Lilac
Rather than the hot pink and bright purple of the nursery, you should aim for muted tones as your kids grow. If their favorite color is purple, go for a lilac rather than a punchy purple. Muted tones will help create a soothing environment that will withstand the test of time. Depending on the accents you choose, you can make the room feel darker or lighter.
Cool Gray
If you don’t know the power of gray, then you’re missing out! It’s such a versatile color—it works just as well in living rooms and bathrooms as it does in your child’s room. Similar to beige, it’s a color that can survive the growth of your child. You can easily transform the accents and décor to match their personality. This makes it a great option for your child’s room!
Paint Designs
Once you’ve decided on your base color, you can spruce up the room even further. Some of our favorite painting ideas for kids’ rooms come from the patterns we choose to decorate. Often, people leave patterns for bedspreads. No matter your child’s age, you can bring more personality to their room by introducing some paint designs to the room. Maybe it’s just an accent wall, a section of all four walls, or interspersed throughout the space. Either way, implementing some of these paint design ideas can give the room more personality!
Chalkboard
Pick up some of our chalkboard paint and make the kids’ room a place where creativity can ignite. It can seem like such a small thing, but giving your children a space to write, draw, and scribble in the comfort of their room is a very cathartic thing. You don’t even have to paint the whole wall—you can just paint a section and let them use that for their needs. The best part is, you don’t have to go for a dull black; with our paints, you can choose a chalkboard finish with any color you choose!
Geometric
You may have seen how popular geometric walls have gotten during isolation. Using geometry in decoration is a great way to pass the time and it often results in a stunning room. Pick a few colors with your child, use painters’ tape to create the design you want, and get painting. Our biggest tip for this paint design is to ensure that you actually plan out your color for each section. You don’t want to have three shapes with the same color next to one another!
Stripes
Another great choice for a low-key design that adds effortless personality is adding some stripes to the room. Whether you go for one long stripe around the room or an accent wall with gorgeous verticals, you can accomplish various designs with this painting technique. You have to be very careful about laying out your lines—you don’t want to paint and realize that your lines are wobbly after the paint dries.
Animal Print
This one might seem difficult, but if you have the time over a weekend, it can result in a personality-filled room. You can go for zebra, leopard, cheetah, or even giraffe. You’ll want to order some stencils, unless you’re talented with a brush and confident that you could keep it up throughout the chosen section. It may take a while, but it’s worth it in the end. We do, however, recommend, keeping the animal print to an accent wall or less. Too much animal print can quickly become overwhelming.
