Do I Need to Prime Walls Before Painting?

Certain paint colors, especially bright yellows, greens, reds, and oranges, as well as some darker accent shades, can be tricky when it comes to painting walls and ceilings. These "poor hiding" colors often do not cover well and typically require a primer to ensure an even finish.

For painting walls and ceilings with these challenging colors, using a gray primer under dark colors or a tinted primer under light "poor hiding" colors can help reduce the need for multiple coats. In our color library, you'll find that colors needing a primer are marked with a roller icon, guiding you on when a primer is recommended.

If you're uncertain about whether you need a primer for your walls or ceilings, consider testing your paint sample on a zig-zag patterned card.

PLEASE NOTE: This guidance specifically pertains to the use of primers with certain colors. Primers are also necessary when painting repaired or uneven surfaces, or bare walls and ceilings that haven't been previously coated.

When to Use Paint Primer for Walls and Ceilings

Using the right primer can make a significant difference in your painting project and can be the key to a more uniform, longer-lasting finish. Here's a guide to help you choose the best primer for your walls and ceilings:

New Drywall: Primer is essential for new drywall (sheetrock and plasterboard) and mudded surfaces. New drywall and sanded joint compounds can absorb a lot of paint, so applying a primer helps seal the surface and ensures even coverage. A single coat of ECOS Drywall Primer or Air Purifying Drywall Primer will create a smooth, uniform base for your topcoat

Stained Surfaces: For walls or ceilings with stains, using a specialized primer is crucial. ECOS Stain Blocking Primer is designed to effectively conceal and block out stains, helping to prevent them from bleeding through your paint.

Painting Over Dark Colors: If you're covering dark colors with lighter ones, a primer will help block the old color from showing through. This ensures that your new paint color appears true and vibrant. Our wall primer is an ideal base coat for previously painted walls.

By using the appropriate primer for your specific needs, you'll achieve a smoother, more durable finish on your walls and ceilings.

What our customers are saying...

"Genuinely the best paint primer I've worked with! It went on well, had excellent coverage, and I love that it was pet safe. A little went a long way, and it was very easy to work with. Fantastic stuff and better than the expensive "regular" primer at my local paint store."

FAQs About ECOS Paints

  • We typically recommend waiting at least 24 hours before sanding or painting. For best results, please follow the application instructions located on each product page of our website.

  • Primer helps seal the surface and creates a bonding layer between the paint and the walls so that it adheres better. This creates a more uniform, professional-looking finish in your space and also makes it last longer.

Primer also assists with significant color transitions, such as painting a light color over a previously dark wall.

  • Our water-based, eco-friendly wall and ceiling primers feature a unique formula created to avoid the harsh chemicals found in conventional primers that often cause headaches, nausea, and worse.

Using eco-friendly, sustainable ingredients and a proprietary mixing process, our primers are applied to your walls just like any conventional primer, using a brush, roller, or sprayer.
