Why You Should Use Primer Before Your Next DIY Paint Project

Primer is a good idea before painting trim, furniture, and cabinets, to help ensure a flawless paint job that can withstand high-traffic or high-use areas of your home. While it's not mandatory for all paint jobs, it should always be used for painting rough, bare, or heavily sanded surfaces.

Here are some other reasons to use a primer before painting:

  • Adhesion: Primer helps the top coat of paint bind to the surface you're painting, helping to create a durable first coat.
  • Sealing: Trim and furniture primers help seal the surface, reducing the risk of paint bleeding once applied.
  • Finish: Using a primer for home projects helps ensure a smooth, even color and finish with fewer imperfections.

What our customers are saying...

"Typically painting makes me feel kind of headachy from the fumes. With ECOS Paints - not a whiff! We painted our whole house and I felt fine. Really glad to have found ECOS."

FAQs About ECOS Paints

  • It depends! You'll want to consider factors such as:

    • The type of surface you're painting
    • External conditions (like air temperature or moisture)

While our primers typically dry to the touch within four hours, we recommend allowing twenty-four hours before sanding or painting. For best results be sure to consult the application instructions on the can or product page.

Just remember - don't forget to paint over the primer! It's not as resilient as protective paint formulas, making it more susceptible to dirt, stains, and other marks.

  • Our high-quality, non-toxic formula was designed to cover more surfaces while using less product. You can expect up to 400 square feet of coverage per gallon of ECOS primer.

This high coverage means you typically only need one coat of our cabinet, trim, and furniture primer for your next home project.

  • If your trim, furniture, or cabinets already have a high gloss finish, are bare, or have been heavily sanded, we recommend starting with a primer.

Certain dark and bright colors (like vibrant orange, yellows, and greens) also benefit from a primer to get better coverage and to ensure your final color turns out the way you want

Using a gray or tinted primer under these darker colors can help avoid the need for multiple coats of paint. We've made it easy to determine if you need a tinted primer by marking these colors with a roller icon in our color library.
