Choosing what colors to paint the exterior of your home is one of the biggest decisions a homeowner faces. It's a big color commitment. Plus, the outside of your house tells the world a little bit about you, so how do you want to present yourself? While most of us keep things pretty simple and traditional, some people throw caution to the wind and go all-out garish. Today we're sharing 25 of the weirdest home paint jobs you’ll ever see. Why would someone want a weird home paint job?
- We were surprised to find out that a lot of these gaudily painted homes were done in protest to city codes or some other grievance the owner had with the government. A man in Cambridge, Maryland painted his house like the American flag after he was told by the city inspectors that he wasn’t compliant with historical code.
- We found the blue house on Houselogic and it was actually created by an artist. According to them, "Artist Peter Kaschnig certainly was in his blue period when he painted this entire house in Klagenfort, Austria, a royal azure."
- The polka dot house is part of an art movement in Detroit called The Heidelberg Project. From their site, "It’s an open-air art environment in the heart of an urban community on Detroit’s East Side. Tyree Guyton, founder and artistic director, uses everyday, discarded objects to create a two-block area full of color, symbolism, and intrigue. Now in its 30th year, the Heidelberg Project is recognized around the world as a demonstration of the power of creativity to transform lives."
- One of the reasons these houses are so incredibly unique to us is that the U.S. doesn’t have that many colorfully painted houses. We don’t know the actual percentage of homes that are painted more creatively, but if you drive down the streets in almost any U.S. city, you'll see a lot of the same colors. We loved seeing photos of Burano, Italy where the whole island is like a great explosion of colors. There isn’t a city in the U.S. that compares to it.
