Mid-Century Modern: As the name implies, this design aesthetic made its debut in the mid-1900s and it is marked by simplicity, natural shapes and chic minimalism, with frequent use of molded plastic, natural wood, and aluminum.
Art Deco: In the 1920s and 30s, this style emerged with bold, streamlined, geometric designs and featuring furnishings with sleek lines, rounded fronts, mirrored accents, and wood pieces with glass tops and chrome hardware.
Arts and Crafts: Launched between 1910 and 1925, the arts and crafts movement focused on handcraftsmanship over industrial, mass production and paid great attention to quality, simplicity, functionality, and natural beauty.
Industrial Modern: As you'd find in a turn-of-the-century factory, this look features the frequent use of raw steel (or other metals), exposed brick elements and rustic wood pieces.
Nautical/Coastal/Cottage: Reflecting the beach-side cottages prevalent in New England, this style uses a lot of crisp whites with blue and sand colored accents and decor pieces like seashells in clear jars, unfinished wood pieces, and rope forms.
Bohemian: Experimental, artistic, and carefree, the Bohemian (or Boho) design features vibrant colors, layered textiles (think floor pillows, throw blankets, rugs, and tapestries), and a thoughtful “messy” look.
Contemporary: This design aesthetic is marked by sleek, curved lines, solid neutral tones with bold-colored accents, and nature-inspired (or direct from nature) decor. Spaces are simple, minimal, and clean, but still warm and inviting.
Country: American country has a rustic elegance with a touch of pioneer and often features white wood paneling, striped, checked, and floral vintage fabrics, and plenty of flea market finds like baskets, handmade pottery, hand-forged metal, and other heritage pieces.
Shabby Chic: Featuring furnishings that are distressed, with peeling paint and exposed layers of colors, this design style is a charming mishmash of vintage, Boho, and traditional elements.
Western: Like the chaps of an old cowboy, worn leather is a common feature in this aesthetic. Other elements include stone hearths and walls, raw woods, oversized furnishings, animal hides, and inviting fabrics.
