DIY Chalkboard Ideas: Two Tone Wall Design

Lullaby 11/01/2013

Today's DIY with Lullaby comes from Danielle of the blog 2 Little Superheroes. She gave her son's room a quick and easy update with a DIY chalkboard using Lullaby Paints Slate gray to make a two tone wall design. It makes a great visual focal point in the room, it's fun for the kids to draw on, and it's made with non-toxic** paint. That's what we call a win, win, win project!

**Conforms to ASTMD-4236, specifically concerning oral toxicity, skin irritation and respiratory effects.

Here's how to make this two-tone wall DIY chalkboard:

Step 1: Prep the surface.

Patch any holes or cracks in the wall. Remove any electrical plates, vents, etc. Wipe the surface and allow to dry.

Step 2:  Draw a line.

Decided how high you'd like the chalkboard to go and use a level to draw a straight, even line across the wall.

Step 3: Mask edges.

Apply painter's tape along the edge of the line, base boards, and any other surfaces you need to protect.

Step 4: Protect the floor.

No matter how careful you are, accidents happen. Put down painter's plastic or an old tarp to protect your flooring from drips or splatters.

Step 5: Paint the wall.

Apply paint using a roller. (If you purchase Lullaby Paints' Chalkboard Paint Kit, you'll get painter's tape, a roller, and a mini paint pan to easily execute your project!) Let paint dry fully and then assess whether or not you'd like a second coat. Our paints have great coverage and give you premium durability, but for a child's chalkboard, we'd recommend a second coat.

Step 6: Season the DIY chalkboard.

To prepare the chalkboard for use, take a piece of chalk (also included in our Chalkboard Paint Kits) and rub the edge all over the chalkboard until it's completely covered in chalk. Wipe off using a damp cloth.

Step 7: Enjoy!

We love the accent pieces Danielle used around her chalkboard - industrial, whimsical, and chic! And, the skyline drawing on the chalkboard makes a clever backdrop for her son's railroad track.
