The Pros of Using Water-Based Nursery Paint

We’re always concerned about what we put in our babies’ environments. We triple-check the recall list to be sure our cribs aren’t on them, make sure the baby food is full of safe, nutritious ingredients, and baby-proof every piece of furniture in the home even though we have a year before they start walking.

One item in a baby’s environment that we often don’t think about is the paint on their nursery walls. Concerned about your paint choice? Here are some of the pros of using water-based nursery paint.

Why Water-Based Paint?

Oil-based paints typically release compounds called volatile organic compounds or VOCs. Along with smelling awful, they can aggravate allergy symptoms, cause headaches, and promote breathing problems. VOCs can linger in the air for months after the paint dries.

These factors can be even more problematic for babies. Babies’ lungs are still developing, making them more susceptible to VOC’s effects. Water-based paints are often VOC-free, making them a far better choice for use in nurseries.

It’s Less Susceptible to Cracking

As much as we love designing delicate, elegant nurseries, at heart, a nursery has to be built for practicality. That means it must be able to take a hit. Oil-based paints are resistant to wear and tear; however, they are more likely to crack over time.

Water-based paints dry differently than oil-based paints. Rather than forming a hard shell over the wall, they create a more flexible layer over the wall. This allows them to resist cracking.

It’s Easy To Clean Up After You’re Done

The nesting instinct gives mothers-to-be a surge of energy to help get a space clean and ready to bring their baby into it. However, just because you have a burst of energy doesn’t take away from the fact that it can be difficult to do physical tasks in the latter part of your pregnancy.

This includes cleaning up after your nursery remodel. One of the pros of using water-based paints is that they’re easier to clean up after you’re done painting the nursery.

We all want to be careful of what we put in our baby’s environment. When you use ECOS Paints’ non-toxic*, zero-VOC**, baby-friendly paints, you can be sure you are surrounding your baby with good things.
