Tips for Decorating Your Doghouse
Your dog is your best friend, so why shouldn’t it have a cute home of its own? Our tips will help you make a doghouse that you and your dog will love.
Dogs: they’re the smiling face when we get home, the star of many of our social media posts, and loyal companions through thick and thin. Because of this, we love taking opportunities to spoil our dogs. But as you peruse your local pet store for the best pet treats and toys, why not consider your dog’s living arrangements? These tips for decorating your doghouse will give your dog a place to sleep that’s just as cute as it is.
Think Practically
Ultimately, your dog doesn’t really care about how its house looks. It’s just happy to have a place to lay its head. But that doesn’t mean you can put any structure together and call it a doghouse. Make sure it meets all these needs:
- Big enough for your dog now and when it gets older
- Uses a well-insulated material that won’t get too hot or cold
- Weather-resistant
- Possible to clean
- In the shade
If the doghouse doesn’t have these things going for it, make sure to make any updates before picking up a paintbrush.
Build Something that Complements Your Landscaping…
There are thousands of ways to decorate your dog’s house. One method many dog owners lean toward is decorating it to match their own home or garden. If you are truly ambitious, this could look like modeling the doghouse’s structure after your home’s. If not, you can simply paint the walls and roof the same color as the house to show that your dog is an important part of the family.
Another method to make the doghouse blend in is a bit of horticultural camouflage. Turning the roof of your dog’s house into a little garden bed gives it a whimsical look that makes a charming addition to any home’s garden. Not only that, but the rooftop garden will actually keep the interior of your dog’s house cooler in the summertime.
…Or Stands Out!
But some people don’t want to camouflage their doghouse. And since your dog doesn’t have a preference on what the house looks like, you might as well allow your imagination to run wild. Choose a bright, energetic color scheme or one of these off-the-wall ideas:
- Paint the walls based on your dog’s fur pattern
- Cover the walls in your dog’s own pawprints in non-toxic paint
- Paint the walls based on fictional dogs like Scooby-Doo or Snoopy
- Pattern the walls to resemble a fire hydrant
- Hang a personalized sign over the door
Use A Safer Paint Option
At the end of the day, we want our pet’s doghouse to be a place where it can be safe, and that means decorating them with pet-friendly materials. Traditional paints tend to include VOCs that can make our dogs sick. Fortunately, ECOS Paints has a wide variety of pet-friendly paints that look good and are VOC-free*. Now that’s something to wag your tail about.
