An Introduction to EMF-Blocking Paint

In the modern world, power lines, cell phones, microwaves, and Wi-Fi are far from uncommon sights. In recent years, however, scientists, health professionals, and other groups have begun asking whether these technological advances might affect our health and safety. With these questions, people have started to find ways to shield themselves from this technology. Thus began the advent of EMF-blocking paint.

What Is EMF?

An introduction to EMF-blocking paint is not complete without an introduction to EMF themselves. EMF stands for electromagnetic fields. A number of natural sources—such as the sun and lightning—as well as man-made sources such as cell phone towers, home energy meters, and Bluetooth produce these fields. These fields produce low-level radiation called nonionizing electromagnetic radiation (EMR). Most experts consider this radiation harmless, and leading health organizations such as the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the World Health Organization (WHO) have concluded that EMR and EMF do not cause health concerns. However, researchers have also found loose connections between EMF and health issues such as insomnia, neurological problems, and cancer.

Because of these ties, many homeowners have elected not to wait for science to make up its mind on whether EMF are dangerous and to take matters into their own hands. Many have begun looking for ways to block these fields, and in their searches, they have been introduced to EMF-blocking paint.

What Is EMF-Blocking Paint?

As the name suggests, EMF-blocking paint is made with materials that are designed to prevent electromagnetic fields from passing through walls. It does so by combining paint with materials such as carbon or nickel. When applied to one wall, it may block signals coming from a particular direction. For instance, if there’s a cell tower to the north of a room, painting the north-facing wall with EMF-blocking paint should block the radiation. It can also be applied to multiple walls, the ceiling, or the floor, and is most effective when the full room is painted.

How Do You Use it?

After priming the desired wall, floor, or ceiling, apply the paint the same way you would apply any other paint. One coat will greatly reduce radiation, though you can increase power attenuation (or reduction of signal strength) with two coats. Afterward, simply paint over the wall with any normal interior wall paint if you want the room to be a different color. Keep in mind that EMF-blocking paints are almost exclusively black or dark gray.

Note

If your home uses wireless Internet, applying EMF-blocking paint may tamper with your Internet connection. You may consider switching to non-wireless Internet if you’re using EMF-blocking paint.

There’s a lot to be aware of in our modern world, but that doesn’t mean you can’t take steps to keep your family safe. Here at ECOS Paints, we have EMF-blocking paint that will keep not only EMF and EMR but also harmful chemicals that often come with non-water-based paints out of your home.
