Preparation
Good surface preparation is vital for the perfect finish. Surfaces should be clean, dry, and free from any dirt, dust, grease, glue, flaking pieces, or contaminants. Repair any cracks, holes, or imperfections. Sand the wood in the direction of the grain to obtain a smooth uniform surface. First use a medium-grade sandpaper (#120) working your way to fine-grade sandpaper (#220). Wipe clean with a damp cloth to remove all sanding dust, and let dry thoroughly before applying the stain. Always spot test on an inconspicuous area to ensure satisfactory results and color.
Application and Clean Up
Stir thoroughly before and during use to eliminate any settling. Do not shake. Do not thin. Do not apply in temperatures below 50°F (10°C). Dries to the touch in 30 to 60 minutes. Recommended wait time between coats is 2 to 4 hours. High humidity and cool temperatures may result in longer dry and recoat times. Clean application tools with warm soapy water.
When working with more than one can, we recommend mixing together the contents of the cans to ensure color consistency. Apply stain in the direction of the wood grain using a clean, lint-free cloth, high quality synthetic bristle brush, a foam brush, or lamb’s wool applicator (for floors). Maintain a wet edge. Allow the stain to penetrate for no more than three minutes. Once the stain has been applied go over the same section with a clean lint-free cloth to remove any excess stain for an even color tone, wiping in the direction of the grain with an even pressure. Do not allow stain that has not penetrated the wood to dry on the surface. Any uneven color penetration can be blended. Rewet the surface with more stain and lightly rub the stain into the surface, blending light and dark areas. To darken color, apply a second coat after two hours, repeating the directions for application of the first coat. Do not sand between coats. When staining a large area (like a floor) it is often better to first divide the floor into smaller areas (with painters' tape) and then stain each one in sequence. (i) Tape off a workable area of the floor, laying the painters' tape along the straight edge of a line of the wood boards. (ii) Stain the first segment (iii) Lift the painters' tape at the edge of the stained area and use it to cover the edge of the area that has just been stained. (iv) Tape off a second workable area of the floor. (v) Stain the second area and repeat. In this way, previously stained areas will not be lapped by subsequent stain applications. After a minimum of three hours (dry time may be extended due to heavy application, low temperatures or high humidity), complete your project by applying a protective finish of ECOS Varnish.
For porous woods (such as Pine) apply ECOS Wood Conditioner and allow to soak in for 10-15 minutes. This will help to ensure even stain color and reduce grain raising on soft and hard woods. Remove any excess Wood Conditioner with a clean cloth. For best results, wait 15-30 minutes before lightly sanding the surface with a fine-grade sandpaper. This will help smooth any raised grain. Remove all sanding dust. Stains can separate quickly and should be continually stirred in the can during application. Five-gallon pails require heavy mixing and shorter-term use.
